Summary
Anastasia is a competitive ice skater with dreams of competing in the Olympics. Nathan is the captain of the school’s hockey team. When one of their rinks is out of service, Anastasia and Nathan’s paths cross when they’re forced to share a rink. With competition just around the corner, Anastasia can’t afford to lose practice time on the rink. Hence, the last thing she needs is to share the rink with unruly hockey players or try to befriend the hockey captain.
Thoughts
Ok, I know I’m late to the party but I finally got around to reading this viral book. Boy, oh boy.
As a Canadian, I do like a story about a hockey player, considering most of the time, the protagonist is a football star. Also, shout out to Hannah Grace for including Vancouver and Seattle!
This book was an easy and mostly quick read. It’s light, heartwarming, and sprinkled with funny scenes in between. I love the supporting characters but I did find the storyline between Aaron and Anastasia to fizzle towards the end as I was expecting more drama between the two of them. Also, I’m a bit annoyed that we never really dived into Aaron and why he is the way he is! I absolutely love the different POVs which allow readers to get the full picture from both sides of the characters.
Another aspect I enjoy is the fact that neither Anastasia nor Nathan is a “Mary Sue” – y’know, those characters who are perfect, strong, know-it-alls, and simply have no flaws to them. Without spoiling anything, both characters are well developed but each with their baggage. Light baggage, but baggage nonetheless (and the baggage does not encompass their entire personality nor the storyline!). Their timeline together is well-paced and not as dramatic as some other YA novels. I felt this relationship was more realistic than others. That being said, I do feel that some readers may find their relationship a bit boring since there’s not much drama to split them apart.
I think this is your typical young adult novel with a mushy frenemies-to-lover. There are some cringy scenes to be had. The writing is good, and the dialogue is realistic for characters their age. The most shocking for me is the graphical explicit sex scenes. Am I the only one to remember young adult books that had PG love scenes?! These sex scenes were hot, steamy, and straight from a porn video.
I pinch the book from between her fingers, examining the turquoise cover, then flicking to a random page in the middle of the book. “You’re reading porn in public? You’re disgraceful!
Hannah Grace, Icebreaker
Rating & Recommendation
I rate this book a 5 out of 5. It’s a cute, fast-paced, realistic young romance with hot, steamy, sex scenes. It’s not overly dramatic or unnecessarily long. I can see how it went viral – great characters, good writing, good storylines, and loveable characters.
Check out Icebreaker by Hannah Grace on Goodreads or Amazon Canada.
